Music Monday: Caffeine by Faith No More

Sleep has definitely been eluding me in the last week, and even when it seems like I’ve managed to sneak in a good night’s worth I’m so tired when I sit down in the morning to write.

So I’ve definitely fallen a bit behind on my work in this week after Daylight Saving Time.

I feel tired, you six-fingered bastard. I feel tired.

Ah well. I’ll get that hour back eventually, and given my forecast for October, I’ll need it. In the meantime, I’ll keep drinking tea by the truckload, and scratching out what words I can.

Forget the glamour and
Mumble a jackhammer

Music Monday: The Cybertronic Spree – The Touch

Happy Monday, folks!

Recently my friend Dan helped start planning a new fan convention in Winnipeg and they reached their Kickstarter goal. I’m really excited to have helped FanQuest get off the ground, and can’t wait set up my book table there.

Dan also introduced me to The Cybertronic Spree along the way, so this seems like a fine song to celebrate their success. Congrats on making your goal, FanQuest. See you in May!

You got the touch, you got the power!
When all hell’s breakin’ loose, you’ll be right in the eye of the storm!
You got the heart, you got the motion!
You know that when things get too tough, you got the Touch!

Music Monday: Monster Truck – The Lion

I don’t listen to the radio much, usually I prefer mixes of my own creation, but in the depths of a recent cold snap my CD player was being a bit of a jerk, and so I came across two songs by Monster Truck. I’ve been listening to them almost non-stop ever since.

I love when serendipity collides between my writing and music in the background. I’m pretty sure the ending of Thunder Road would’ve turned out differently if the randomizer hadn’t brought up AC/DC’s “If You Want Blood (You Got It)” at the precise moment I started writing the finale. A lot of Monster Truck’s music would fit right in on a Thunder Road soundtrack, and one in particular inspired me to start writing a short story featuring one of my Graveyard Mind characters, so it’ll probably be a long while before they’re out of rotation.

I’m down, but I’m not defeated.
So long, I’ve been feeling this way.
I’m down, but I’m not defeated.
A new life, starts today.

Music Monday: “Lawyers, Guns & Money” By Warren Zevon

It’s barely a week into January and I can already feel this winter starting to get to me. I’ve run out of places to pile snow and there’s no break to the cold in the current forecast. At least the days are getting longer. In the meantime, a little Zevon is always good.

Now I’m hiding in Honduras
I’m a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The shit has hit the fan

Music Monday: “Some Velvet Morning” By Primal Scream

Maybe not an obvious Halloween or October song, but it did feature on my homebrewed Spike and Drusilla soundtrack back in my Buffy the Vampire Slayer watching heyday and it reminds me of vampires. So there.

Some velvet morning when I’m straight
I’m gonna open up your gate
Some velvet morning when I’m straight
I’m gonna open up your gate

Flowers growing on a hill, dragonflies and daffodils
Learn from us very much, look at us but do not touch

Not Music Monday: “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)” By Concrete Blonde

It took me longer than it should’ve to encounter this song, moslty because I hated that “Joey” song which was everywhere, but man, this one holds up.

Let’s be vampires. Who’s with me?

There’s a crack in the mirror
And a bloodstain on the bed –
There’s a crack in the mirror
And a bloodstain on the bed –
O you were a vampire and baby
I’m walking dead

Not Monday Music: “Bela Legosi’s Dead” By Bauhaus

Music Monday got away from me again! But beter late then never. Enjoy a throwback to the time when I could dance to the same song for nine minutes straight. By the time you’re done listening, we’ll be that much closer to Halloween!

White on white translucent black capes
Back on the rack
Bela Lugosi’s dead
The bats have left the bell tower
The victims have been bled
Red velvet lines the black box

Music Monday: Everyday Is Halloween By Ministry

I love the fall months, and not just because of Halloween, but man do I love Halloween!

There will probably be more music posts than just Mondays this month. I thought I’d share a bit of my Halloween playlist. Anyway, have fun trick or treating groovy ghouls.

Well I live with snakes and lizards
And other things that go bump in the night
Cos to me everyday is Halloween
I have given up hiding and started to fight
I have started to fight

Music Monday: “Walk This Way” By Run-DMC With Aerosmith

So I’ve been watching Luke Cage and the show and cast and music all kick ass. I’m not done yet, so no spoilers.

I don’t remember seeing any Run-DMC references yet, but they were almost certainly my first exposure to hip hop and rap (pretty sure they were also my first exposure to Aerosmith, but that’s neither here nor there).

I’m loving the literary and musical references that I’ve caught in the show, and I’m sure there are many more that are beyond my experience and are flying over my head. I can’t wait to finish the show so I can start digging into some of the things I’ve missed but also because it’s just that damned good. Right now, I’m enjoying it more than either Daredevil or Jessica Jones and I loved both of those shows.

See-saw swingin’ with the boys in the school
With your feet flyin’ up in the air
Singin’ hey diddle-diddle with the kitty in the middle
You be swingin’ like you just didn’t care
